Illuminating Darwin

Arabella Buckley (1840 -1929, London and Devon, UK) had no formal education when she became the world’s most famous geologist, Charles Lyell’s, literary assistant. Through him and her keen intellect, she learned about the natural sciences, became one of a group of science giants, and was one of Charles Darwin’s closet friends and the only woman he discussed books with. She was an influencer and a populizer of evolution and knew the inner workings of science greats, such as Lyell, Wallace, Huxley, Darwin and others. Arabella developed a strategy to defend Darwin against those plotting against him. And, she had a few secrets of her own!
